Here's a compelling French Art
Deco console of wrought iron, spare of design
and ornamentation (the way we like it), with a gorgeous marble insert, a fitting
surface for a spectacular clock set, bronze, or floral display.
I bought this in Paris about 15 years ago from a deco dealer
at Clignancourt (the premier French antiques market). The size is formidible, at 60 1/2 inches wide
(including the iron's curl on either side). The console is 40
1/2 inches high, and including the curl in front, 16 1/4 inches
deep.

Graceful, but with powerful curves...
|
The base mirrors the top surface
in design. The patina is excellent, deep and rich.
|
The guage of the iron is significant
at 1/4 inch! Every inch of its surface is worked and textured,
even the edges of the struts.
|
The marble insert is about one
inch thick, which in combination with the iron makes for a very
heavy console. The marble is in perfect condition, without a
scratch or chip anywhere. This photo reflects the true colors
-- deep, rich browns, lighter browns, white, and tiny hints of
gray. The console seems to be a tiny bit higher on one side (the
left) than the other, which I've easily dealt with by just putting
a small piece of wood or something under the right side of the
base. The struts waver a bit here and there (from being perfectly
straight). Otherside, perfection! $3450.
